How to apply polymeric sand correctly, avoid hazing, choose the right product for natural stone, and re-apply when needed.
Polymeric sand uses polymer binders activated by water to harden the joint fill, resisting washout, weed growth, and insect intrusion. For natural stone — particularly marble and limestone — the choice of polymeric sand matters beyond just performance. Standard gray polymeric sands contain iron that can stain light-colored stone at the joint edges over time.
Always use white or light-colored polymeric sand specifically formulated for natural stone. These products use polymer-coated silica with minimal iron content. Standard gray polymeric sand is not recommended for marble, travertine, or limestone installations.
Run the plate compactor (with rubber pad) over the entire installation twice before applying polymeric sand. This seats the pavers into the bedding layer and opens the joints slightly for better sand penetration.
Polymeric sand applied to a wet or damp surface causes severe hazing on natural stone. Wait at least 24 hours after any rain and check that the stone surface is fully dry before applying. This is especially important for honed marble.
Pour polymeric sand across the surface and use a push broom to sweep it into the joints. Work in multiple directions to ensure complete joint fill. Fill joints to within 1/8" of the top of the paver — do not overfill.
Use a leaf blower on low setting to blow off all residual sand from the stone surface. Any sand left on the surface when you apply water will haze. This step is critical for polished or honed marble — the haze is extremely difficult to remove after it sets.
Use a gentle misting spray — not a direct stream — to wet the joints and activate the polymer binders. Follow manufacturer instructions for water volume and timing. Do not flood the surface. Allow to cure for 24 hours before foot traffic.
Polymeric sand haze on marble is one of the most frustrating installation problems to fix. The only reliable prevention is ensuring the stone surface is completely dry and completely free of sand residue before any water is applied. When in doubt — blow off the surface again before wetting.
